An early Edison cylinder (#535) from approx. 1897-98. 'The Forge in the Forest' was composed by Theodor Michaelis under the German name 'Die Schmiede im Walde'. The recording set up for this one was definitely not the best as the triangle drowns out a lot of the other instruments.

The title itself is a well-known traditional. As far as it was audible for me, the language is Swedish. Due to its playback speed of 160rpm this cylinder dates likely from 1902-1906. The Cylinder Archive [www.cylinder.de] intermediate archival release: Riccardo Martin is singing Ah si ben mio from Il Trovatore by Giuseppe Verdi, recorded in 1909 on Edison Amberol Grand Opera series #B161. While this acoustic recording itself has a frequency range up to approx. 4 KHz, the harmonic content goes well beyond 6 KHz and is essential for a psycho-acoustic recognition of certain clarity.
